All of the remastered recordings here are based on master tapes that have been restored and sped up through the Plangent process, and are the latest remastered recordings by Grammy Award-winning engineer David Glasser. The Grateful Dead's legacy manager and audio archivist David Lemieux is also producing this 50th anniversary edition. Commenting on hearing "WAKE OF THE FLOOD" for the first time, David Lemieux wrote the following. "I was completely absorbed by the stunning arrangements of the Dead's wonderful songs. Everything is clear and present. The songs and vocals are poised and poised, as if the band members, who have known both the sweet and the sour sides of the music, are conveying what they have experienced in the eight years since the Grateful Dead were formed. What is even more captivating is the new sound that has been added to the album, and it is very impressive. Without these contributions, the album would not have taken the shape it did.
